From growing up in Sydney to building an international career in corporate and international tax, Donna’s journey to partner has been guided by curiosity, continuous learning, and a genuine interest in people. Here, Donna reflects on the experiences that shaped her, the importance of investing in yourself, and how her role has evolved from tax specialist to trusted adviser, all while balancing a busy career and young family.
I grew up in Sydney and have lived here my entire life. I went to the University of New South Wales and completed an undergraduate degree in economics, returning later to complete a master in accounting. I’m what’s known as a ‘boomerang’ – I first joined HLB Mann Judd in 2013, left to take on a role at the Australian Tax Office and then returned to HLB Sydney in 2022.
Starting out
I chose accounting because it offered the chance to work across different industries and connect with a wide range of people. I liked that no two clients would be the same, and that variety keeps me curious and engaged. It’s a career that blends technical knowledge with strategic thinking, and that really appealed to me.
I specialise in corporate and international tax. My work includes helping multinational clients as well as training staff on corporate and international tax topics, leading transfer pricing and country-by-country reporting and advising both listed companies and smaller corporates.
At the end of my placement, I was fortunate enough to have been offered a position at the firm, where I could work on a part time basis whilst completing my studies. I had only completed my first year of my commerce degree; I was eager to dip my toe in the profession to see whether it might support my studies and expose me to the opportunities that could be available to me.
The importance of investing in yourself
HLB Mann Judd has always been a supportive and collaborative place to build a career, and I’ve been able to take advantage of some great learning & development opportunities.
Early in my career, I went on secondment working for an HLB International firm Withum in the USA, spending time in both Princeton & New York. It was an invaluable experience, seeing how other firms operate gives you fresh perspectives and new ways of thinking.
My time working with the ATO gave me a unique perspective into how tax issues are viewed from a regulatory perspective. That experience helped me strengthen the way I support clients and communicate complex requirements in a practical and proactive way.
I’ve also seen how quickly our industry has evolved. When I first joined, the firm was transitioning to paperless processes and electronic workpaper. Today, we have a dedicated digital transformation team and advanced automation tools that streamline processes and help us spend more time where it matters – delivering value to clients.
Donna’s advice
I’ve always tried to stay curious, asking questions, exploring new ideas, and learning from every experience. That mindset has helped me adapt to change, embrace new opportunities, and continue growing throughout my career.
Our industry has changed significantly. We’re no longer just accountants; we’re trusted advisory partners for our clients.
Our focus today is on combining deep technical expertise with commercial insight. It’s not just about reporting numbers; it’s about helping clients navigate complex challenges and plan for growth with confidence.
Outside of work
Life is certainly busy now with a little one! I’m enjoying playing netball again, getting out for walks, and spending time with my family whenever I can.
