David joined HLB Mann Judd Perth as a cadet in 2007 and has built his career with the firm for more than 15 years. David’s journey to partner has been shaped by strong relationships with colleagues and clients, continuous learning and a commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes for clients.

I grew up in Farnborough in the UK before relocating to Perth with my family at the age of 12. I later moved to Sydney and began my university studies at the University of Technology Sydney before completing my Commerce degree, majoring in Accounting, at Curtin University in Perth. Accounting was one of my strongest subjects at school, and the clear career pathways and practical nature of the profession made it a natural choice.

Starting out

I joined HLB Mann Judd Perth in February 2007 as a cadet, combining study with hands-on experience. The opportunity arose through a recommendation to apply for the firm’s cadetship program, which appealed to me as a way to gain real-world exposure while completing my degree.

After meeting with leaders in the Perth office, I felt confident HLB Mann Judd was the right place to start my career. The firm’s culture, people and commitment to development stood out early on and have continued to shape my career with the firm.

The importance of investing in yourself

Over more than 15 years at HLB Mann Judd, I’ve seen significant changes in the profession which make investing in yourself to remain up to date, more important than ever.

For me, investing in yourself means being adaptable, continuing to learn and embracing new ways of working, while maintaining a strong focus on service quality and client outcomes. I have also broadened my experience internationally, spending two years in London, before returning to HLB Mann Judd in 2018. These principles have guided my progression at the firm, culminating in my promotion to partner in January 2026.

The most significant change over the course of my career is the technology we use and how we approach our working day. Transitioning from paper-based processes to a fully digital environment combined with the rise of flexible working and virtual collaboration, has reshaped how we deliver our work.

David’s advice

I believe strong relationships are central to a successful and sustainable career. Building trust with colleagues and clients through authenticity, honesty and consistency has been key to my professional growth.

Being genuine in how you work and communicate makes a real difference. It builds respect, encourages collaboration and helps everyone work towards shared goals.

I would also encourage early-career professionals to take advantage of learning opportunities, seek out mentors and remain open to change as the profession continues to evolve.

Outside of work

Outside the office, I enjoy spending time with my wife, friends and family. I make the most of Perth’s lifestyle through coastal walks, coffee catch-ups and dinners with loved ones.
