Meet Emilly, an accountant in HLB Adelaide’s Business Advisory team. Emilly’s journey is one of passion, empathy and drive to help clients and others around her.
My mission in life is to do good for others. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given – both personally and professionally. I, therefore, want to give back where I can. I am a proud Brazilian-Australian woman and strong advocate for diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
Starting out
I was raised in Dias D’Avila, a municipality in the state of Bahia in the North-East region of Brazil. After high school I studied a diploma in mechatronics and spent a year working in the chemical industry. I then switched paths and decided to go into finance, starting my economics degree.
After my studies, I felt that it was time to support my family business. I took over the reins and spent several years managing our business in the retail construction industry. One aspect of my role was to negotiate contracts with both clients and banks. This experience gave me the confidence to start-up a business with my sister in the fashion industry.
At the age of 27, I was ready for my next challenge. I moved to Australia to learn English and completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) at Torrens University. I also later completed my CAANZ certification.
I joined HLB Mann Judd Adelaide in November 2019 and the firm is now like family to me! I can honestly say that, at HLB, I have built relationships for life. Everyone respects and cares for each other.
Currently, I manage a number of different clients including individuals, trusts and companies. I aspire to make a difference to clients by adding value to their businesses and understanding their individual needs. I am also responsible for supporting the interns in the Business Advisory division. The firm has a great mentor program.
A passion for purpose
I am passionate about making the world a better place. HLB’s leadership team also share my vision. All staff in the firm are encouraged to get involved in community and fund-raising initiatives. I strongly believe our participation has made a positive social impact.
The firm has supported the Hutt St Centre for many years. Hutt St Centre is a place of connection and support, where people facing homelessness are empowered to rebuild their lives. Every month we volunteer in the local kitchen – cooking and serving meals. A word, a hug or just a welcoming smile from the people we meet always makes my day!
I am also the lead organiser for #HLBCommunities Day in Adelaide. HLB’s global annual initiative gives back to local communities by volunteering and donating staff time.
#HLBCommmunities Day means giving back! We are very fortunate to live in Australia. It’s important to take pause from your daily routine and appreciate this beautiful country and all that it has to offer.
In past years we have planted trees in the Adelaide parklands and packed care packs for youth on the streets. We are currently planning our next #HLBCommunities Day activity on Friday, 2 June.
Outside of the firm, I am a committee member (treasurer) of the Brazilian Association of South Australia (BASA). It’s an opportunity to use my professional skills to assist local businesses. We run business workshops at the firm and in the community. It’s rewarding to be seen as a trusted Chartered Accountant who can help businesses grow and reach their goals.
Emilly’s advice
Find a firm that aligns with your values. For me, it’s important to make connections with people and give back. The coaching and mentorship of the partners has been invaluable. They have supported my ideas and given me the freedom to follow my passion.
Outside of work
I like to stay busy. I spend time with my friends, hike and dine out. I also like to learn new things. I currently practice kickboxing and dancing 5-7 times per week. I recently started learning German – es ist aufregend, aber herausfordernd (translation: it is exciting but challenging).
In the community, I am involved in a volunteer program that recycles bottles to raise money for Brazilian orphanages.
Lastly, and if you haven’t already guessed, I love travelling! Australia has so much natural beauty – there’s always more to explore.
