We would like to introduce you to Hannah. She joined HLB Mann Judd Melbourne in January 2024 in the firm’s business advisory division.

Whilst studying at Deakin University, Hannah decided her next step would be to work for a mid-tier accounting firm. She was keen to get exposure to wide range of clients and opportunities. She also wanted to work in a firm that had lots of different people to learn from and, importantly, she knew who they were.

What’s your ‘Team HLB’ story?

When looking for a firm to start my accounting career, I searched for the best mid-tier firms in Australia, and HLB stood out to me immediately. During the interview process, I felt an instant connection with the staff and partner during the interview process, and I knew from that initial experience of the HLB culture, this would be a great place to begin my career.

In the interview, they emphasised cultivating a positive, a social workplace culture and highlighted their social activities, which was a big attraction for me. A great work life balance was also indicated, which was personally very important to me as I play AFL in the winter and train for triathlons in the summer – both keeping me very busy!

Since joining the firm, I have thoroughly enjoyed being exposed to a broad range of clients, industries as well experiencing a hands-on approach on development and training for graduates, including support for professionals achieving their CA qualification.

The office is also located in the Melbourne CBD, which means it’s very easy to maintain a work life balance, like watching live music after work. I love going to concerts (some of my favourites this year have been Taylor Swift & Olivia Rodrigo)!

8:30am

I arrive in the office after an early start, which means some exercise to clear my head and get me ready for the day. This is often a beach walk or swim, or a run with a friend.

I like to start my workday by checking my emails and reviewing my to-do list. I write down everything I have to do so I have a game plan for the day and keep track of my tasks.

We have daily team meetings, which I really enjoy. Each day in the team catch up we share any news or plans for the weekend, and then we discuss our work for the day. It’s also a great way to learn and understand what other team members from different experience levels are handling throughout their day. Afterwards, I usually get a coffee or tea with a colleague.

Often the morning is dedicated to client work. There is always someone close by to ask questions or to help if needed.

Lunchtime

I normally take lunch at around 12.30pm – 1pm. I try and bring lunch from home when I can, and I will eat with my colleagues in the lunchroom. It’s a social spot in the office.

After we eat, we like to go for a walk to get some fresh air and I will get a coffee as an afternoon pick me up.

Around once a week we will go out for lunch. Another great perk of working in the CBD –  there is always a new café or restaurant to try. Sometimes we will go shopping at lunch which is always a fun break from work, there is always someone in the office who will join me for an afternoon sweet treat too.

The afternoon onwards

After lunch, I often have queries for team members, my manager or partners about the work I have done from the morning. The environment at HLB is really welcoming, so I often walk into a partner’s office with my questions, and they will provide me with their advice and continually assist my learning and development.

Once my work has been reviewed, I will sit with the relevant team member to discuss areas for improvement and complex issues for the client if they arise. I really enjoy the collaborative aspect of working in accounting, with my favourite time of the day being when I get to help others and work together.

5pm

After work, if it is AFL season I will head to straight to training. HLB is great because I can start work earlier on the days I have football, so that I can make training on time. Once a month we have firmwide drinks which I really enjoy, it’s a great way to connect with members outside of my division and get to know staff on a more casual setting at work. Often we will go out after work together; there tends to be a lot of competitiveness in the team when it comes to a game of pool!

Other HLB highlights include…

My favourite thing about my time at HLB is the social events, such as the EOFY party and the book club. It’s been a great experience for me forming connections with my team in a more relaxed environment. Another highlight for me was when I I was given the opportunity to start attending client meetings. It is fulfilling to see how the work I do for clients, directly impacts them and their businesses.

Another personal enjoyment for me at HLB Mann Judd Melbourne is the football culture. Many of the partners here have played at quite a high level, so I enjoy talking to them about their experiences and how the sport has shaped their careers, it has given me a sense of connection within the firm and towards the partners.

Hannah’s advice for graduates

I would say, go to work with a positive mindset and see everything as an opportunity to learn. When I started at HLB, I was told to ask lots of questions, and over time, I realised how important this skill is in your development – so ask lots of questions! I have also learned not be afraid of making mistakes. The mistakes I’ve made have often turned into my biggest opportunities for growth.
